The youth of Jena are right to stand up against racism. The charges against the students are vindictive – they are a political attempt by racists in the prosecutors’ office and court system to stop black people in Jena from confronting racism. The Jim Crow prosecutors and judges will not succeed.
The criminal charges aim to silence black people – young people in particular. We will not be silenced—not by attempts at intimidation from racist students acting like they are in the KKK threatening to lynch people, and not by discriminatory charges from the prosecutors’ office. We will stand up. We will not be intimidated. We will defend ourselves.
By Any Means Necessary stands with the youth of Jena who have stood up. Young people standing up for themselves, confronting racism and prejudice is exactly what BAMN is about and exactly what this country needs to reverse the attacks on civil rights and open up a new road to progress. The mass marches of Latina/o and other immigrant communities last spring show the way. When we stand up and struggle, we win.
We call on the establishment civil rights and civil liberties groups to demand that all charges be dropped and for the young people in jail now to be freed. The young people of Jena have led by standing up. The black young people of Jena are heroes, not criminals. We must build the new militant, integrated, youth-led civil rights movement following the Jena example.
