BAMN

Campaigns

BAMN is building the movement to end Jim Crow, second-class treatment against immigrants, documented and undocumented. We are building a united mass, integrated civil rights movement that will unite black and brown to win full freedom and equality for all. We are fighting to win college financial aid and citizenship for undocumented immigrant students, and organizing to make every school, college, city, municipality, and state into a sanctuary, including getting university administrations and cities to not cooperate with immigration police. We are mobilizing community resistance to anti-immigrant raids.

Affirmative Action

BAMN is continuing the struggle to win full integration and equality in American society. Currently, BAMN is combating Ward Connerly’s effort to get white-majority electorates to outlaw affirmative action through state ballot initiatives. In August 2008, BAMN succeeded at keeping Connerly’s initiative out of Arizona, after having defeated him in Missouri and Oklahoma earlier that year. BAMN is conducting legal challenges against Michigan’s Proposal 2 and California’s Proposal 209, to strike down as unconstitutional statewide affirmative action bans in Michigan and across the country. Public Education

BAMN is leading and coordinating resistance in communities to the cynical, deceptive national effort to replace public schools with segregated charter schools. The popular, widely-supported principles of universal public education and of realizing Dr. King’s dream of integration (“separate can never be equal”) can be defended through mass student/teacher/parent/community organizing. Immigrants Rights

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Rights

BAMN is very proud to have united Latina/o, black , Arab, Asian, and white, gay and straight, documented and undocumented into a single organization that is building a united movement against all forms of oppression.  About 2/3 of our members are LGBT or questioning. Many of these students have joined BAMN in response to our message that ‘you can only be a great leader by being proud of who you are.’ In our experience, LGBT students are often the first to step forward to lead struggles against all forms of injustice. BAMN provides them with a means to fight for dignity and equality. More on BAMN’s LGBT work

Labor Movement

BAMN is uniting the new civil rights movement with the struggle to rebuild the labor movement. The struggles against racism and sexism and for equality cannot succeed without the potential massive power of the labor movement. The labor movement cannot stop the current attacks on living standards or secure workers a decent life, without uniting with the new civil rights movement and taking up the struggle against racism.
